  • Saved passwordsOnly youSealed on your device with a key made from your sync code.1, 2

Who holds the keys
Your devices, using your sync code. Brave never has the key.
What Brave can still see

Is Brave Sync end-to-end encrypted?

Yes. Brave says your synced bookmarks, passwords and other data are stored in an encrypted file, and only you have the key, which stays on your devices1.

Brave's developer notes explain that each device encrypts everything before it syncs, using a key stretched from your sync code2. Brave runs its own sync server, so the data doesn't go to Google2.

What can Brave see about my synced data?

The details it needs to keep your devices in step. Brave's developer notes list device names and types, IDs for synced items, version numbers and creation times as left readable2. The contents stay sealed2.

What if I lose my Brave sync code?

Brave can't help. Because only you hold the key, Brave says it's impossible for it to recover your synced data if you lose your devices or keys1. Sync chains you stop using expire after 12 months, and their data may then be deleted1.

Does Brave use HTTPS by default?

Yes. Brave tries to upgrade every site to a secure connection, and loads it unsecured only if the site doesn't support one or is on a short exception list3, 4. It started on computers and Android in 2023 and came to iPhone in version 1.68 in 2024, with an optional Strict mode that warns you before falling back3, 4.
