Is it encrypted?
Type any app, or try , , , or .
Yes. Only you and the people you message can read your WhatsApp chats and calls. Backups are the exception: they're only sealed if you turn that on.
Every app, part by part

CompareEncrypted isn’t the same as private
Almost every app encrypts your data now. What decides who can read it is who holds the key.
Encrypted on the way
Locked while it travels, then unlocked by the company that runs the app. The company can read it, and can be made to hand it over.
Who can read it: you, them and the company.
Gmail, Instagram DMs and ChatGPT work like this.
End to end
Locked on your device and only unlocked on theirs. The company passes it along but never has the key.
Who can read it: only you and them.
Signal, WhatsApp chats and FaceTime work like this.
For most people, the gap is email
Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo Mail and iCloud Mail all hold the keys to your mailbox. Secria Mail is the email we make: your mailbox is locked with a key made from your password, on your device. We don't read your mail, show ads or build a profile.
Yes. Mail between Secria users, and all mail stored in your mailbox, is sealed with a post-quantum key exchange.
Changed recently
When an app changes what it seals, the answer changes here, with the date. All changes
- ChromeChrome now uses secure connections by default for everyone, and asks before opening a site without one.
- DiscordDiscord said all its calls have been sealed by default since early March, except Stage channels.
- InstagramInstagram stopped offering end-to-end encrypted chats.
- Proton MailProton added post-quantum protection you can turn on, on every plan.
How we check
Every answer on this site went through the same three steps. The full method
- We read the source
Each part comes from the company’s own security papers, help pages and settings. News is only used to date a change.
- A second check, from scratch
A separate pass opens every source again and checks each line, then fixes or cuts anything it can’t confirm.
- We date it
Every answer shows the day it was checked. When an app changes, the change is logged with its date.
Made by Secria. We make private email, so we have a stake in these answers. Secria’s own apps are graded by the same rules, and sorted by the same rule, as every other app here.
Free to use and cite. Every answer is open data. Each app has a JSON file, the whole set is in llms.txt for AI tools, and changes have their own feed.
