Is iCloud Mail end-to-end encrypted?
No. Apple's iCloud security overview says iCloud Mail does not use end-to-end encryption "because of the need to interoperate with the global email system"1. Mail is encrypted in transit and on Apple's servers, and Apple stores the keys1.
Does Advanced Data Protection encrypt iCloud Mail?
No. Advanced Data Protection raises the number of end-to-end encrypted iCloud data categories to 25, including backups, photos and notes1. iCloud Mail, Contacts and Calendars are not among them, and Apple still holds their keys1.
Apple's guidelines for US law enforcement say the same. With Advanced Data Protection on, email, contacts and calendars may still be provided in response to a search warrant2.
Can Apple read my iCloud email?
Apple holds the keys, so it can1. Apple's law enforcement guidelines also describe mail logs, with the time, date, sender and recipient of messages, kept for up to 25 days2.
To seal a single message, Apple says its own mail apps support optional S/MIME1. Mail locks the message only when it has the recipient's encryption certificate3, so the other person needs S/MIME set up too.
