Is Microsoft Teams end-to-end encrypted?

Not by default. Teams encrypts calls and chats on the way and in Microsoft's data centers, with keys Microsoft manages1. End-to-end encryption is an extra option for one-to-one calls and, with Teams Premium, scheduled meetings1.

Microsoft says end-to-end encryption for one-to-one calls is available to commercial Teams users, and an admin has to allow it first1, 2. Personal Teams accounts don't get it, as of 25 October 2026.

How do I turn on end-to-end encryption in Teams?

On a work or school account whose admin allows it, open Settings › Privacy on a computer, or Settings › Calling on your phone, and turn on End-to-end encrypted calls3. Both people have to turn it on, and you can check that the code shown in the call matches3.

Recording, live captions, transcription and adding people don't work in those calls2.

Can Microsoft see my Teams recordings?

Yes. Microsoft's encryption page says meeting recordings, transcripts and recaps get standard encryption only, never end-to-end encryption1. Features like Copilot in meetings and recaps need Microsoft's service to see the content, which is why they're switched off in end-to-end encrypted meetings1, 2.

Microsoft's privacy statement says it also collects traffic data from its communication services, including whom you contacted and when4.
