Is Google Meet encrypted?

No. Google can read Meet meetings and recordings. One-to-one calls between personal accounts are the exception: they're sealed if you turn on Additional encryption before the call.

Who holds the keys
Google, except in calls with Additional encryption on, which Google says only the people on the call can unlock.
What Google can still see
Meetings, calls and recordings that use the default cloud encryption, plus performance and crash data and some location information; Google says Meet doesn't use your information for ads.

On business plans, admins on Enterprise Plus and Education Standard or Plus can turn on client-side encryption, so only the people in a meeting can decrypt it.

Turn on Additional encryption for a call

  1. In Google Meet, start a call to someone who uses a personal Google Account.
  2. On the pre-call screen, turn on Additional encryption.
  3. In the call, look for the shield with a lock and the blue lock badge.

It only works when both of you use personal accounts. In-call messages, reactions, polls and add-ons are turned off while it's on. Check for the lock before each call.

Email is worth checking next: Gmail, Outlook and iCloud Mail can all read your mailbox. See which email services can.

Is Google Meet end-to-end encrypted?

Not by default. Google says all meetings are cloud encrypted: your data is encrypted on the way and at rest in Google's data centers1. That means Google holds the keys. Meet calls are cloud encrypted by default too2.

For calls between personal accounts, you can add end-to-end encryption by turning on Additional encryption on the pre-call screen. In-call messages, reactions, polls, add-ons and abuse reporting turn off while it's on1. Work and school accounts can't use it2.

What happened to end-to-end encrypted Meet calls?

Older Meet calls, which Google calls legacy calls, were always end-to-end encrypted2. Google has been replacing them with new Meet calls, which are cloud encrypted unless you turn on Additional encryption2.

The switch was first planned for September 2025, and a March 2026 report said it was complete5. One older Google privacy page still says calls in the Meet app are end-to-end encrypted4, but Google's encryption help pages say new Meet calls are cloud encrypted by default1, 2.

Can Google see my Google Meet recordings?

Yes. Recordings are saved to Google Drive with cloud encryption, so Google holds the keys1. Google says Meet doesn't use your information for advertising4.

On business plans with client-side encryption, recordings and transcripts aren't available at all, and Google never gets the keys3.

Is Google Meet quantum safe?

Only for the trip. On 12 October 2026, Google started adding post-quantum protection to Meet calls, beginning in web browsers on computers and on meeting room hardware, with phones to follow6. Google says it protects today's Meet traffic from being recorded now and decrypted by a future quantum computer6.

It doesn't keep Google out, because cloud-encrypted calls are still open to Google. As of 25 October 2026, Google hadn't said whether it covers calls with Additional encryption.
