Can Google read my Google Docs?

Yes. Google says your documents are encrypted on the way and at rest1, but it holds the keys. It processes them for spam filtering, virus detection and malware protection, and so you can search your files1. Google says it opens your private content only with your permission or when the law requires it1.

Google's privacy policy lists "docs and spreadsheets you create" among the content it collects2. Google says Docs doesn't use your information for ads1.

Does Google use my Google Docs to train AI?

Google says it doesn't scan the content of your documents to train its foundation AI models1. When you use its AI features in a document, what you type and what it suggests are processed to give you that help1.

Is Google Docs end-to-end encrypted?

Not on personal accounts. Some of Google's business and school plans offer client-side encryption, which Google calls end-to-end encryption that its servers can't decrypt4. Your admin has to turn it on, and you need a work or school account3.

Even then, encrypted documents can't yet be opened in the Google Drive app on Android or iPhone5. No end-to-end encryption for personal accounts announced as of 25 October 2026.
